Malawi   Diplomatic Missions Abroad

Achievements

Malawi has fourteen (14) diplomatic missions abroad and one (1) Consulate General.  The primary objective of the Malawi diplomatic missions abroad is to facilitate the promotion of sustainable development, economic growth, tourism and trade competitiveness, cultivate, harness and strengthen areas of economic and political cooperation at both bilateral and multilateral levels, and maximize the effectiveness of their representation in promoting and attracting foreign investment and aid.  

Major Functions

The major functions of the Malawi Diplomatic Missions are:

  •  To present and promote Malawi’s positive image internationally and maximise benefits accruing to her by virtue of her diplomatic relationship with   other countries
  •  To facilitate the mobilisation of aid and technical assistance from bilateral and multilateral donors
  •  To facilitate economic activities relating to trade, investment and tourism

Political Affairs Department
In order to achieve some of the objectives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, there is the Department of Political Affairs, which promotes and maintains sound and effective socio-political relations between Malawi and the rest of the World.  It also promotes peace and international security by attending and contributing to various international fora.

Functions of the Department

The major functions of the Department are to:

  • Monitor and analyse political, social and cultural developments worldwide in order to interpret their implications on the political and social scene and advice government on appropriate course of action.
  • Initiate and review Malawi’s foreign policy with a view to align it with current developments
  • Advise Government on the impact which domestic developments may have on relations with other countries.

Departmental Structure

The Department is headed by the Director of Political Affairs.  The Department is structured into two Divisions, namely The Africa and Middle East Division and the Division of Europe and Commonwealth, Americas, Australasian, United Nations and Other International Organisation.   These divisions are managed by Deputy Directors.

Protocol Department
The Protocol Department, which is headed by the Chief of Protocol, deals and coordinates all matters related to general administrative requirements of foreign diplomatic missions and international organisations accredited to Malawi and State/Government ceremonial functions..

Functions of the Department

The major functions of the Department are to:

  • Provide Government Protocol Services which deal with immunities and privileges, accreditation and consular affairs; and.
  • Provide State Protocol Services, which involve the administration of State/Government ceremonial functions.

Departmental Structure

The Department is structured into two Divisions, namely the Government Protocol Division which is responsible for immunities and privileges and accreditation and consular affairs and the State Protocol Division which deals with State hospitality and ceremonial functions.   The Deputy Chief of Protocols assists the Director in managing these divisions.
