Mandate and Responsibilities


The Ministry of Labour is mandated to protect and develop the labour force to contribute to the socio-economic development in Malawi. The ministry’s mandate is derived from the laws of Malawi, International Conventions and other legal instruments. These include:-

  • Labour Relations Act No. 16 of 1996
  • Occupational Safety, Healthy and Welfare Act No. 21 of 1997
  • The Employment Act No. 6 of 2000 and
  • Internal Labour Conventions
