Implementation Arrangements; The Department implements its activities through the following sections: Farm Mechanisation Section-promotes technologies that are aimed at reducing drudgery of farm operations. Horticulture Section-Promotes technologies aimed at improving production of horticultural crops Field crops Section-Responsible for improved seed and sustainable production of all field crops. Crop Protection-Responsible for migratory pest control, pre and post harvest control of pests and diseases.

Department of Irrigation

There are four irrigation technologies which are utilised by the smallholder farmers namely; Gravity-fed, Treadle Pumps, Motorised Pumps and Watering cans. The gravity-fed technology accounts for 56% of the total developed area under smallholder farmers.This technology is the most commonly used because of its cost-effectiveness as it does not need fuel as is the case with the motorized pump-based technology

The Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development (MOAIWD) is one of the key ministries in the Malawi Government. Agriculture, being the mainstay of the country’s economy, makes the Ministry prominent in Malawi society in general, and in its contribution to the economy in particular.The Ministry is organized in 7 technical Departments namely Agriculture Extension Services, Crops Development, Animal Health and Industry, Agriculture Research, Agriculture Planning Services, Land Resource and Conservation, and Fisheries. The Ministry also includes Irrigation and Water Development, the government institution responsible for the water sub-sector.

National Agricultural Investment Plan (NAIP)

The National Agriculture Investment Plan (NAIP) is the framework guiding investment in Malawi’s agricultural sector over the next five years. The NAIP provides a framework to coordinate and prioritise investments by various government agencies, Development Partners (DPs) and None State Actors (NSA) in the sector. The NAIP succeeds and builds on the achievements and lessons learned under the Agricultural Sector Wide Approach (ASWAp).
