Right
Hon. Dr Cassim Chilumpha is a lawyer, academician, legislator and writer all
rolled into one. He was a running mate for Presidential candidate for the ruling
United Democratic Front (UDF) in the 2004 general election.
Fondly known as “Kaka”, Dr. Chilumpha was born on November 29, 1958 and grew up at Chiutula Village, about eight Km from Nkhotakota Boma in the area of Chief Malengachanzi in Central Malawi.
He did his primary school education at Chisoti and Nkhotakota LEA schools before he was selected to Nkhata Bay Secondary School where he passed School Certificate Examinations and proceeded to Chancellor College to graduate as a lawyer.
Dr. Chilumpha worked for a year in the Ministry of Justice before winning a scholarship to study for a Master's and PHD degrees in law at Hull University in the United Kingdom. Later, he joined the University of Malawi as a lecturer.
At the Polytechnic, he rose to the ranks of Head of Business Administration, Dean of Faculty of Commerce, and Associate Professor of Commercial Law. He entered the political arena in the 1980s.
He was Minister of Defence, Education, and Justice and Attorney General in the last administration. He is also Minister responsible for water.
Dr. Chilumpha has authored law books, and in his free time, he likes writing books, listening to soft music, and watching television.
