About Directorate of Nursing Services

The Directorate of Nursing and Midwifery Services oversee the implementation of Hospital Based Nursing Services (Nursing Education), Community Health Nursing Services and Quality Assurance Services. Funding for the activities is from Malawi Government ORT. Some activities on the other programs like Community Home Based Nursing are also funded fromĀ  National AIDS Commission (NAC), PACT through the Palliative Care Association of Malawi (PACAM), GTZ and WHO.


The vision of nursing/midwifery services is to promote excellence in the delivery of nursing and midwifery care services at all levels in order to improve quality of life of all people in Malawi.


The Mission of Nursing/Midwifery Services in Malawi is to assist individuals, families, groups and communities to attain a high level of well being by providing promotive, preventive, curative, rehabilitative and palliative nursing/midwifery services at all levels of health care delivery system.


The Objectives of the nursing and midwifery services are to:

  • promote the delivery of safe and effective nursing and midwifery care.
  • develop nurses' and midwives' skills and knowledge to enable them to provide safe and effective care to all including the vulnerable groups.
  • promote recruitment into the nursing and midwifery professions and retain those currently in service.
  • provide expert education support and ongoing supervision for practicing nurses and midwives.
  • strengthen nursing and midwifery leadership.
  • promote the wellbeing of the nursing and midwifery workforce and mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS.
  • develop international collaborative partnerships and promote the professional status of nurses and midwives.

To achieve this, the Directorate is subdivided into three main subprograms namely:

  • Community Health Nursing Services
  • Quality Assurance
